Think Pink!!!!! For 31 Days in October
All cool things that are pink and occur in the real world of nature. On facebook I have promised to post one true pink think in nature to raise breast cancer awareness for October 2012. I will mirror it here all in one stop.
OCT 1.) The pink lake in Senegal Africa.
This is Lake Retba in the principality of Senegal in West Africa. This lake has a 40% salt content in most places and is only 3 meters deep. The people who live there go out and harvest the salt from the water to be used as a commodity. They have to cover their bodies in shea butter before going out to prevent their skin from severely drying out from the effects of the salt and sun on their bodies. The pink color is caused by a small living organism, an algae, that survives on the salt and sun. The algae is called Dunaliella salina.
OCT 2.) The pink lake in Esperance Australia.
This lake in Australia contains the same salt loving algae as the one in Africa (almost on exact opposite sides of the earth, if you could stick a skewer through the planet on a slight angle).
OCT.3.) The pink dolphins of the Amazon.
The pink dolphin is exclusive to the Great Amazon river and her tributaries. They have no natural predators other than us. They are very fast swimmers reaching speeds of 20mph. Their brains are 40% larger than ours. Their color comes from the food they eat in the river. Unlike the standard ocean dolphin, they have no pronounced dorsal fin just a little hump and their tail fins are MUCH larger,
They hunt primarily in a group for smaller fish creating a "cattle drive" effect to get the fish to the surface. They are very social. They take care of each other's offspring. Babies nurse for up to 20 months. The mother's are pregnant for up to 1 year but no less than 9 months. They are very vocal to each other, with clicks and sounds and touch each other, almost "hugging" with their fins. They also are ENDANGERED! This is yet ANOTHER REASON WHY THE AMAZON RAINFOREST IS A MAGICAL, BEAUTIFUL, PRECIOUS AND IMPORTANT PLACE THAT MUST BE PROTECTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok I am climbing off my soap box and going on.
OCT. 4.) Pink Katydid
OCT. 5.)Pink Flamingo

OCT. 6.) Orchid praying mantis
OCT. 7.)Pink elephant
OCT. 8.)Pink Japanese Maple
This variety of Japanese maple called " Oridono Nishiki" is a variegated Japanese maple in green and white. But the white is pink in new leaves, making the maple very unusual.
OCT. 9.) Galah Cockatoo
The Galah Cockatoo. These live in HUGE groups in Australia flying in flocks of hundreds at a time. Many were captured and sold in the US as individual pets. Now thankfully there is a ban on buying or selling parrots that are not raised here. All parrots must have a foot band indicating the aviary they were raised in and the date hatched. The bands must be a solid unbroken ring on the foot which is slipped on when they are very small. If you own any type of parrot that has a cheap open band it is an illegal captured animal that was tortured to get here. I am not going to get on the soap box for this now but just do not buy a bird unless they have the proper band.
OCT. 10.) Purple Dottyback
Purple Dottyback saltwater fish. You may recognize this if you have the aquarium screen saver.
OCT.11.) Pink Iguana
Scientists have found that a pink lizard species is more than 5 million years old, longer than any other iguana has lived on Galapagos. And when Charles Darwin made his study of the Galapagos Island in 1835, he missed the pink and black iguana. The iguana has no scientific name as of yet.

OCT.13) Pink Ocean Dolphin
Pink saltwater dolphin. Unlike the pink Amazon river dolphin, the pink ocean dolphin is not a species but a super rare anomaly. They are actually albinos that look more pink than white. Super rare and beautiful!
OCT.14) Pink Full Moon
Pink for today is the "Pink Full Moon". This actually does happen, many theories include: time of moonrise if at sunset, pollution and angle of the moon sun and earth depending on when and where you are viewing from earth

OCT.15) Pink Deep Sea Brittle Star Fish
Pink picture for today is from our own "inner space" far below the ocean's surface sunlight cannot reach so the creatures way way way down there have their own light.
It is called bioluminescence. This is a type of starfish called a "deep sea brittle". Simply amazing what we have right here to explore and as challenging or more so than space travel. Truly undiscovered wonders we may never see. This animal lives as far down as we can go. There are caverns that make the Grand Canyon in the US seem like a mere pothole.

OCT. 16) Pink Elephant Hawk Moth
Today's pink is in honor of my Mother's birthday and her love of elephants that she illustrates and writes children's books about but, since I already posted a pink elephant, I found something really rare. Yesterday we were under the ocean today we are in the air.

OCT. 17) Pink Burning Bush
Pink fall foliage of "buring bush" we have them all over here in New England. Green and very round bushes without even trimming and in the fall they are spectacular!
OCT. 18) Pink Salt
Pink Salt. From the Himalayan Mountains in Nepal. This is a stone that is ground into salt. It is a form of halite which is natural earthsalt. Basically a rock that contains extra amounts of minerals including copper causing the pink hue. Once it is ground by the native people of Nepal it is traded as a commodity for food, clothes and other staples. It is supposed to be very healthy.
OCT. 19) Pink Sand

In honor of Trevor's 8th birthday. He is the 7 year old Connecticut State BMX STATE CHAMPION. He rides on dirt but since I could not find pink dirt I found pink sand.

OCT. 24)Albino Cobra
Almost all reptiles that present their most prominent markings in black normally will translate into pink if they are albinos. Basically what is black is pink.

One farmer, Bert Bouwman of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota planted fifteen thousand “porcelain doll” seeds this past year and is now selling – and shipping them – around the country.
The organization says there are more than fifty farmers who are participating in the campaign this year. As part of their campaign promise each has pledged to donate twenty-five cents for each pumpkin sold to breast cancer research.

OCT. 27) Pink Lemons
On the inside anyway
OCT. 28) Pink and coral Cornsnakes
These are bred on purpose for sale to pet owners. They are not poisonous.
OCT. 29) Pink Hippo
Not the most attractive animal in the world but they are among the MOST DEADLY to humans. The will kill. They are the most deadly threat to humans in Africa. More than any predator including the big cats and snakes.
Pink Hippos are just a case of the hippo drying out. When they sweat, they sweat PINK!
OCT. 30) Pink SNOW
This is real. It is called "watermelon snow" caused by an algae. It is supposed to smell like watermelon but I don't think anyone should eat it.
OCT. 31) Pink Rainbow
This extraordinary image captures the moment a bolt of lightning cracks beneath a rainbow as the setting sun turns the sky salmon pink in Kuala Lumpur.
This one is a picture of a sunset rainbow as well as the one below

This is the last day of my journey into things that are pink in the natural world for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I wanted to leave it with something truly ethereal, beautiful, unusual, rare and uplifting. I did my research and made sure these are all real things that occur. Please support, give, be supportive of those suffering, throw parties for those cured, honor those who are lost and most of all check yourselves everyday for early detection.
We are all special and matter to the whole world! All in our own way. Everyone has a gift that makes all of us stronger, appreciate living and make living exciting and worth it! Take care.
Meow for Now,
Catraven =^..^=
